In August we counted 63(!) pushbacks with 1477 people being illegally pushed back by the Greek authorities.
Since the Greek and European authorities began systematically pushing people back at EU's external border in March 2020, there has never been a month with as many pushback cases as in August 2021. This marks a tragic record within the last 1,5 years of increasing border violence.
In the meantime, Lesvos no longer seems to be the main destination for people on the move. As already in July around half of the pushbacks (31) took place near Samos.
Since January, we recorded reports of 281 cases with 7.341 people being violently denied their right to ask for protection. What we are currently witnessing is an ongoing war against refugees by the EU, which endangers the lives of people or kills them.
