We are a Berlin based non-profit-association founded in 2018 by a transnational collective of activists. With our ship MARE LIBERUM (pleasure craft) we monitor human rights in the Aegean Sea, mainly off the coast of Lesvos. Our vessel is operated by a crew of seven people who combine a variety of skills and knowledge, such as nautical, engineering, media, human rights advocacy, research expertise and experience in search and rescue operations.

Our crew at sea can rely on a backoffice structure which provides all necessary administrative work meanwhile engaging in further research and the processing of all our findings from our monitoring activities at sea.

As a member of the legal team, you will support the work of the backoffice in tasks of legal research and advocacy. Main responsibilities include: drafting reports or communications to UN bodies and researching the legal background to Mare Liberums projects. The workload depends on the ongoing projects within the organization. The work is voluntary and it is possible to get involved based on personal capacities. It would be desirable that you can commit about 5 hours per week, including meetings.

We are looking for people with a background in European Law and Human Rights Law, that are compassionate and are exceptional at team work. Mare Liberum is composed by people from all backgrounds and we encourage diversity within our team. If you are a creative person, who enjoys working with people from different backgrounds with the goal to defend human rights, make sure to apply!
